Frank Zane - God of Aesthetics

IFBB Mr. Olympia1977-1979

Frank Zane, the God of aesthetics was regarded as a legend in the golden era of bodybuilding, in the 1960s and 1970s.

    • Frank Zane was born on June 28, 1942
    • Place of Birth: Kingston, Pennsylvania.
    • Height: 1.75 m and competed in 91 Kg weight category.

Mr. Olympia (3 Times), Mr. Universe (3 Times), Mr. World and Mr America.

He has been named as one of the “Top 10 Legends of Bodybuilding” and also was awarded “The Best Physique of All Time” by Muscle and Fitness Magazine in April 2015.

Frank's Early Life

Frank Zane was inspired after reading Muscle Magazine as a teenager and started his first step in bodybuilding. He went from 130 pounds (59 kg) at 14 to 160 pounds (73 kg) at 17 through weightlifting. In 1964, he received a Bachelor of Science from Wilkes University.

Frank’s physique was a unique combination of symmetry and lean muscles. Zane was the first athlete to have brought up a lean body on the stage of Mr. Olympia and won the title for the same reason. He brought the significant lean and symmetric body back into the world of fitness, going against the typically huge body stereotypes.

Zane’s priority was not to become a bodybuilder but he wanted to achieve fitness, and that is why he regards bodybuilding as a form of art rather than a sport.

Zane won the IFBB Mr. Olympia titles in 1977, 1978 and 1979. He won the IFBB Mr Universe title in 1965 and 1968. He was inducted into the coveted IFBB Hall of Fame, alongside other icons like Reg Park and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Frank's Bodybuilding Journey

Frank Zane’s physique was a result of both light and heavy training. In his early days of career, his training consisted of light weights and high reps. This approach lead to create the perfect lean physique and awarded him his share of bodybuilding titles. But Joe Weider constantly reminded him, that the muscular size could only be achieved by training with heavy weight. This was something lacking for him to enter the stage of Mr Olympia.

Finally Zane began to prepare for that year’s Olympia. His lifting during that time consisted of three to four exercises and three sets each for most body parts—a lower volume than what he was accustomed to. Most sets resided in the 8- to 12-rep range, the most notable exceptions being calves and abs, which continued to get high reps. As a result, he added considerable size to his physique and won his first of three consecutive Olympia titles.

“The only way you can get muscle size is through heavy training. I find that if you train heavy, and then you lay off for a while, you hold your size longer. Years ago my training consisted of a lot of light pumping movements, but my size quickly diminished when I stopped training.”

But due to heavy weight training, his shoulders, knees, and lower back all suffered. Thus, later in his competitive days, he was forced to return to light training.

But injury wasn’t the only reason Zane shied away from extreme loads. He believed heavy weight wasn’t necessary if one can focus and concentrate into the muscles he is training.

“During workouts I close my mind to all else except the muscle being worked.”
