Choking Rescue

Rescue Procedure from Choking

Choking is a common cause of cardiac arrest and is preventable if it is attended quickly. The correct response for a choking person depends on the degree of airway obstruction, whether the person is responsive or not and the age of the person.

The below table shows the steps for rescue action to be adapted for adults and children:-

Steps for Rescue Actions

Abdominal Thrust

If there is a foreign object in the individual’s mouth and can be removed, then do it immediately. If he does not begin breathing continue to provide CPR and rescue breaths until help arrives.

To be performed if the person is responsive and older than one year of age.

To perform the abdominal thrusts properly, do the following:

  1. Check if the person is responsive or not. Stand behind the responsive person and wrap your arms around their waist under the ribcage.
  2. Put the side of your fist above the person’s naval in the middle of the belly. Do not press on the lower part of the sternum.
  3. With the other hand, hold the first fist and press forcefully into the person’s abdomen and up towards their chest.
  4. Continue performing these thrusts until the obstruction is relieved.

Back Blows & Chest Thrusts in Infants

In a choking condition for an infant who is responsive but less than a year ols, back blows and chest thrusts are performed.

To perform the back blow and chest thrusts properly, do the following:

  1. Hold the infant in your lap and they should be resting on your forearm. Put the forearm on your thigh.
  2. Put the infant with their face down and their head lower than their chest.
  3. Support their head and neck with your hand in order to avoid putting pressure on their throat.
  4. Using the heel of your free hand, deliver 5 back blows between the infant’s shoulder blades.
  5. Using both hands and arms turn the infant face up so they are now resting on your other arm. This arm should be now supported on the thigh.
  6. Make sure to keep the infant’s head lower than their chest.
  7. Using the fingers of your free hand provide up to 5 quick downward chest thrusts over the lower half of the breastbone. Perform one thrust every second.
  8. If the obstruction is not relieved turn the infant face down on your forearm and repeat the process.
  9. Continue these steps until the infant begins to breathe or becomes unresponsive.
