Planes of Refernce for a Human Body

All possible movements of the body occur in these 3 planes. There are about 21 different movements that the parts of the body can execute in the different planes.

When a human body is standing in its anatomical position then it may be divided into 3 planes namely

Sagittal Plane: The Plane of Reference that divides the body into left and right portions. Frontal / Coronal Plane:

The Plane of Reference that divides the body into anterior and posterior sections.

Transverse Plane: The Plane of Reference that divides the body into superior and inferior portions.

Each Plane has an axis perpendicular to the plane. These planes and associated axis helps in accurate description of joint movements during exercise activities.

The planes and their associated  perpendicular axis are as given below:-
  1. Sagittal Plane: Mediolateral Axis
  2. Frontal Plane: Anterior-posterior Axis
  3. Transverse Plane: Longitudinal Axis
